Greetings from our classroom to you! December is a month full of many exciting events, holidays and traditions! Many “elves” (from the story The Elf On The Shelf) have already made their appearance in our homes, and we really enjoy hearing about the silly things those elves have been up to! With that being said, it must be one of our favorite times of year again: Holiday Traditions and Holiday Stories!!
During the full month of December we welcome and encourage parent volunteers to share a tradition at the start of the day with our friends and/or read a story at the end of the day. Please think about what traditions and stories you share at home with your family and consider sharing with your child’s friends at school. Our scheduled time for Holiday Tradition volunteers is from 9:00-9:30 a.m. and the time for Holiday Story volunteers is at 11:45 a.m. We look forward to seeing you soon!!
Brrr… it sure is getting cold outside! Just a reminder to please make sure you change out summer clothes for winter clothes in your child’s extra box. Furthermore, please be sure to send your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather. We go outside to play every day, even when it is cold, so please send winter hats and mittens! Also, keep in mind that with the winter weather comes the snow, ice and potentially dangerous wind chill levels. Please be sure to call our office phone in the morning or check News Channel 5 for any school closings. A good rule of thumb: If Avon Lake City Schools are closed, so is Pembroke Kids!
Did you know that we have a sled riding hill behind our playground?! This is such a fun place to visit during the snowy days of winter, however the children must have on snow pants and boots to enjoy the fun! (We don’t want them getting wet and cold) You may choose to leave a bag with these labeled items at school, or send them each day. Whatever is easier for you, works for us.
A winter wonderland is coming together in the hallway and will be in our classroom soon as well. Our friends, along with Miss Theresa and Miss Cecilia’s friends have made two large evergreen trees for our hallway mural. We will be working with the kids to decorate these trees, create an ice skating rink, a sled riding hill and whatever else our friends think of, all while learning new and exciting facts about winter and all things related!
Some of the behind the scenes things you may not see while taking a quick look are the areas of interest that we will be teaching and assessing this month. Our math concepts for December are comparing and measuring. We will be comparing size, length, weight and volume. We will be measuring using non-standard units of measurements, such as unifix cubes, our feet, blocks and books, and also standard units of measurement such as a ruler and a scale. We will also focus on journal pages and phonological awareness (rhyming and syllables.)
Our last day of school before Winter Break is Friday, December 22. We will return to school eager to learn on January 3, 2013.
As always, our door is always open. Please feel free to call or email us at any time. and
Warm wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Holiday Season!
