Pembroke Kids will host Preschool and Kindergarten Open Houses on Thursday, January 6th and Tuesday, January 18th from 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm. This is a perfect time to tour our school while classes are in session, or stop by later in the day after work. Meet our teachers, learn about our early childhood programs, and explore our classrooms with your child.

Our private, all day Kindergarten, our Parent-Toddler Program, Young 3’s class, Mixed-Age Preschool and K-6 Before & After-School program have been awarded a 3 star Step up to Quality rating by the State of Ohio. Step Up To Quality is a voluntary, quality rating system for early care and education programs. Programs can earn a 1-,2-, or 3-Star Rating by meeting and exceeding the quality benchmarks for the State of Ohio. Our 3-Star rating is a level of quality achieved by less than 15% of all Star Rated programs. As of today, we are the only 3-Star rated early childhood program in Avon/Avon Lake, and one of only 3 in Lorain County.

My daughter is attending Pembroke for kindergarten this current school year, and we could not be more amazed at the excellence of this program. The small class size and the outstanding quality of the teaching have enabled our daughter to excel and grow in ways we could not have imagined, and the year is only halfway through! She began reading in a rudimentary way almost immediately at the start of the year, and she already has grown to the point of easily moving through “first readers” books that are full of blends and diphthongs (“ch,” “ou,” etc.) Impressive! What amazes me even more is the writing she brings home. Weekly she brings home multiple books she’s written complete with plots and pictures. Over the past two months we’ve noticed that these books have become more clearly-written, showing that the teacher has emphasized the spacing between words and the clarity of the handwriting. The stories and pictures are also better developed recently, the result of the teacher’s support of our daughter’s growth in following tasks through to the end. Our daughter’s math skills are also becoming impressive, as she not only adds and subtracts, but she also is gaining strength in creating and interpreting graphs.

Pembroke stands out in what it does well. It also stands out in what it doesn’t do. I’ve never seen a “color this square blue” worksheet or any form of busy work come home. All homework and in-class products exhibit an emphasis on analytical, creative, and critical thinking. It is also obvious that fundamental work ethics, such as completing tasks, and social skills, such as collaborating in teams, are important at Pembroke. The curriculum is clear, creative, and capable of meeting each student where s/he is at…and taking that student to remarkable levels of progress and development. We are grateful that our daughter is a Pembroke kindergarten student, and we look forward to our son participating in the program when he is old enough.
