December 17: POLAR EXPRESS DAY!! On the last day of school before holiday break, we celebrate the magic of the Polar Express at school. Children are asked to wear pajamas to school. I will be placing a sign up sheet outside of the classroom door for needed items on that day (i.e. chocolate milk, holiday cups, wrapping paper, candy canes). In addition to the donations, I am asking each family to bring in a $10 wrapped present “from Santa” which will be given to your child on this day. On Polar Express Day, children will board the “train” (set up in the wiggle room) to listen to the book of The Polar Express, sing holiday songs, drink chocolate milk, and eat candy canes. When the train stops, we will get off at the North Pole to see Santa.
WRITER’S CELEBRATION: Mark your calendar for Thursday, December 16th. We are inviting the kindergarten parents in to the classroom to be our audience for Writer’s Celebration. During this celebration, the children take turns reading their work aloud. Following the reading, we all share in a toast and a special treat. We will have our celebration from 9:00-9:15am. Hope to see you there!
HOLIDAY TRADITIONS: Don’t forget to sign up outside of the classroom to share a holiday tradition or read a special book to the class.
Holiday Break: Our last day of class is on Friday, December 17. We will resume classes on January 3. Please check our website for DDC holiday break camp.
GUIDED READING: We began guided reading groups a few weeks ago. Children are placed in small groups with students at, or near, their reading level. We meet once a week. Depending on the group, students read all together, pointing to the words as they read. Other groups may take turns reading the words independently. The point of guided reading groups is to give children more focused attention in reading instruction. Children are working on word decoding skills and comprehension.
THEME: We began a new learning theme in the classroom. We have begun to learn about the Polar Regions. We will be learning about the differences between the Arctic and Antarctic. We will be learning about the land, oceans, plants, and animals. We have created an igloo in the drama learning. Students will be able to explore with icebergs and animals in the sensory table. To go along with our theme, we have begun reading a new chapter book: Mr. Popper’s Penguins. The children are already excited about the adventures of Mr. Popper and his penguin Captain Cook.
